Negotiating salaries in the Gulf, step by step

Base pay is only part of a Saudi offer. Housing, transport, schooling and tickets often decide the real value.
A Saudi package is built from components, not a single number. Comparing two offers on base salary alone is the most common mistake candidates make.
The components
- Basic salary, which drives end-of-service benefit
- Housing allowance, often 25 percent of basic or paid annually
- Transport allowance, commonly 10 percent of basic
- Annual flight tickets for you and dependants
- Medical insurance class and whether family is covered
- School fees, which matter enormously in Riyadh and Jeddah
How to open the conversation
Give a total package range, not a basic figure, and say what it includes. Anchor on the market: published ranges for your role and city are a fair reference.
End-of-service benefit
Your gratuity is calculated on basic salary. A higher basic with a smaller allowance is often worth more over a three-year contract than the reverse, so read the split carefully.
Before you sign
Confirm the probation length, notice period, annual leave days, and who pays iqama and dependant fees. Get all of it in the written offer.
